Denby Grange Sports Club
Exciting times ahead!
If you live the Wakefield side of Horbury Bridge or the Huddersfield side of Flockton – chances are you don’t even know Denby Grange C & A.C. exists regardless of the fact that this hidden gem has been providing sporting facilities since at least 1902 – probably much earlier than that! Located on Smithy Lane (off Old Road) in Overton, the Denby Grange Miners Welfare Scheme has been turning out cricket, football, bowls & tennis teams almost since Adam was a lad!!!!
Sadly the tennis section died with the pavilion fire in the mid 90’s but all other sections are going from strength to strength – the Bowl’s section regularly supplies 10 teams to the local leagues, Little Bull FC are stalwarts of the Wakefield District Sunday League and the Cricket Section have 2 senior teams in the Huddersfield Central Leagues. One of the biggest good news stories is that following the success of Netherton Junior’s Under 6’s trialling the facilities last season – the whole club is to re-locate all of it’s teams up to Denby Grange from the start of next season. This will mean an extra 100 boys & girls using our facility every week..
We are currently in discussion with Wakefield MDC, Sports England, the local parish and Coal Board Regeneration to see if this facility of ours can be extended, secured and improved – to provide a sporting legacy locally for another 110 years!!!
