Netherton Youth Crew (NYC)

Netherton Youth Crew is for the young people of Netherton and also the surrounding area, between the ages of 12 and 16 years.

The club provides a safe and stimulating environment for the children to meet socially and recreationally, with responsible supervision. The club meets every Wednesday during school term times, at Netherton Village Hall, from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. Weekly activities include music, computer access, X-box, Wii, Playstation, table tennis and pool, with a tuck shop which sells hot snacks and a variety of drinks.

As well as the weekly club sessions, additional events are organised during the course of the year to provide added interest and stimulus. For 2012, the club has been fortunate to be awarded two grants, one from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and one from Wakefield MDC Community Chest, which will enable the creation of a craft table and a beauty make-up and therapy course at the weekly sessions, and outside activities including off-road motor cycle training at BUMPY, Birstall, Go-Karting and archery at Bradford, abseiling and rock climbing at a venue to be confirmed, and a series of evening watersports events at Pugneys Water Park, which will allow the children to experience canoeing, kayaking, and sailboarding. All will take place with qualified instructors, and transport will be provided from Netherton Village Hall as necessary.

Membership of the club is simple, but we do require parental consent to help safeguard the children. If you want to know more, ‘phone Andrew Shaw on 01924 275414 or Alison Staal on 01924 277885 . You can also speak with Mark Robinson or Hayley Briggs at the Breakthru Youth Project at Horbury School.

The Youth Crew are always on the look-out for additional volunteers to help with the running of the club, and should you wish to offer some time for a valuable and rewarding cause, please contact either Andrew or Alison, on the numbers above, for further information. We operate a rota system for volunteers, so this need not be too demanding on your time.
