Litter in Sitlington


I want to have a grumble and rant about litter in our rural area.


A lot has been said about a wind turbine being built in our lovely area, but nothing is ever mentioned about the rubbish which is strewn around the district, which to my mind is a lot worse. Whatever happened to community spirit, when we all pulled together? This doesn't seem to happen anymore. If you see a piece of litter, can, or bottle please pick it up and put in your own bin.

There are always exceptions; there is an environmentally friendly couple who live in Netherton who walk several times a week, collecting rubbish and recycling what they can, but who wish to remain anonymous. They did confirm that a lot of what they collect is litter thrown from cars. They also find rubbish by the canal, left by fishermen i.e. umbrellas, tins used for bait and towels. Bus shelters are also used as dumping areas. Leaflets and directories, discarded by deliverers are another problem, together with drug litter. These good Samaritans are also subject to verbal abuse from groups of young people. They did, however, say that they have found some very interesting and unusual objects, the identity of which they wouldn't divulge!

I have spoken to W.M.D.C who couldn't confirm how much money was spent in this area collecting rubbish per annum, but who confirmed that the situation is monitored every 2 weeks. Lamp-post bin collections are on a 10-week cycle. The main roads are swept and mini-sweepers are used on the smaller roads.

Unfortunately W.M.D.C. cannot hand out litter pickers and gloves anymore to enthusiastic helpers due to the cost and government cutbacks. Community Service Persons can only be used after concerts, galas etc., or on large areas of rubbish, as there are insurance, welfare and supervision issues. However, if a group of environmentally, community-minded residents decided to get together, the council would provide equipment and help supervise a litter picking event.
