Spring!
Although winter has not hit as hard as last year, the dark nights and particularly damaging winds have taken their toll and there’s no point pretending you’re not going to be out in your garden the first warm day of spring.
While there is no harm clearing up fallen branches and debris, wait until the soil is no longer wet enough to form a ball in your hand before walking on it and compacting it. But don’t wait too long to start your clean up - it’s much easier to cut plants back before the old growth gets tangled up with the new.
Remove any dead annual plants that remain over winter. These will not return and any self-seeders will already have done their job. Once you start to see new growth on your perennials it’s safe to begin removing winter mulch and pruning them to ground level. When the danger of hard frosts is past, it’s safe to prune most woody perennial flowers and plants and evergreen and semi-ever green plants.
Spring is the season to trim back the tattered foliage and encourage new growth. For the most part, ornamental grasses and roses are also ready for a good haircut and pruning. Most evergreens should require little spring care other than some tidying up and shaping.
Most plants enjoy a good feed in spring. If you have rich and healthy soil, a bit of top dressing with compost, manure or a complete slow release organic fertiliser should suffice. If you prefer using synthetic fertilisers, you can start applying it once your plants show signs of new growth.
Spring is also the time to divide and transplant as soon as possible after the plant emerges, and to stake those plants that will benefit from vertical support.
Some lawns will need an early season rake-over and their first cut usually around mid-March. A neat and tidy edging will set off your borders and if you really want to show off your garden then it deserves a good layer of mulch!
