Summer in the Garden


It’s always a bit difficult to stay positive and to believe summer will come, when you’re sitting in your living room looking out onto your rain-soaked garden during the middle of the April shower season.


We were spoilt before Easter with a lovely spell of unseasonal sunshine and like an idiot I heard myself saying that it was ‘too hot’ whilst mowing the 5th lawn of the day. As Captain Mainwaring would have said, ‘stupid boy’! We need this rain though and it certainly helps green up the trees, bushes and grass. I think that garden mulch, pebbles, plum slate and stone paths and patios look their best after a good watering. The garden feels fresh.

I watch Calendar and Look North weather on a daily basis and try to plan my jobs for the week ahead based on their wise words. Ha! More often than not they spend the best part of their two minute slots telling us of the weather we’ve just had and how they’d almost got it right the day before. BBC’s Countryfile is possibly the best 5 day forecaster but sometimes I wish they would be more specific on a local level. Still, we muddle through and by the end of the week most of the jobs have been covered.

If you’ve been busy and wise over the last few months and looked after your garden through spring, you will be rewarded in summer with a garden to be proud of. There’s nothing better than taking a seat in your favourite part of the garden in the early evening sunshine and enjoying the view across your striped and neatly edged lawn, to the planting, flowers and foliage now at their best at this time of year. With a glass of red wine or a cup of Twinings tea, listening to the evening birdsong and a little bit of Radio 4 Extra – the classic summer scene is set. Oh my goodness, I’ve turned into my dad!

I’ll be in Normandy for this year’s D-Day Anniversary events the week before the Open Garden Day on Sunday June 10th, but I’ll be back in time to take part and look forward to seeing you.
