Home Grown Horbury
Growing Locally
What is Home Grown Horbury?
Home Grown Horbury is a group for gardeners in Horbury, Ossett and the surrounding areas, keen to grow their own fruit and vegetables, but struggling to do so on their own because of a lack of either
time, space, experience, resources or in some cases a combination.
What do we hope to achieve?
Our main aim is to find ways to have a go at growing our own fruit and vegetables and to increase the availability of healthy, locally grown food.
Through our own experience we realise that there are a number of obstacles preventing many people from doing this, so we are working to remove these obstacles locally by:
· Helping people with land meet people with time.
· Helping people gain access to under used plots of land
· Providing support and information for inexperienced growers
· Creating networks of growers to share information and resources
We have the following projects under development:
Incredible Edible Wakefield Website
We set up the Incredible Edible Wakefield website www.incredible-edible-wakefield.co.uk as a way of sharing information on all the resources and growing schemes that already exist in the Wakefield
District and highlighting other ideas that are being used across the country by people like us who just want to grow and eat healthy, local food.
Plot Finder
We are running a local Landshare scheme called Plot Finder which allows individuals or groups with gardens or land that they are happy to share with growers to register as a plot owner and anyone
looking for land to grow on to register as a plot seeker.
We are then putting owners and seekers with matching requirements in terms of location and size of plot in touch with each other and we provide simple written agreements that can be used by both parties to help avoid disputes.
Home Grown Horbury’s Green Gym’s
In conjunction with Plot Finder we are running a scheme called Home Grown Horbury’s Green Gym where members get together once a week to work on turning local plots into community allotments that can then be used by Gym members to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Community Growing Licences
We have also started a campaign to encourage Wakefield Council to adopt an idea called Community Growing Licences as a simple way of giving individuals or groups access to under used plots of council
land for the purposes of growing fruit and vegetables and have started to identify possible plots which could be used as part of a pilot scheme.
You can sign our petition supporting the campaign at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/growinginwakefield/
Community Supported Agriculture Scheme
We also have a long term goal of setting up a community supported agriculture scheme for the area that could be used to provide opportunities for the wider community to be actively involved in
producing their own food.
The scheme would include everything from crop planning, through the various stages of growing, right to the eventual harvesting and distribution of the produce and would also provide learning opportunities for local people to develop growing skills that could be taken on and used in the wider community.
Growing Clubs
We have already started a local growing group for the Horbury and Ossett area and would like to develop a network of paid growers to run school allotments and gardening clubs on behalf of local
schools.
